Meet Us Mondays: Larysa Fedarava, Embryologist

Larysa Fedarava, Embryologist, Genesis Fertility Centre
Larysa Fedarava, Embryologist, Genesis Fertility Centre

My name is Larysa and I am originally from Belarus. I was clinical laboratory technician in a pediatric oncology / hematology centre in Belarus. I enjoyed the job because it required special skills and I relished its challenges while trying to save lives of children.

My family and I moved to Vancouver in 2007. In my very first Canadian job, I worked as a medical office assistant at Burnaby Medical Centre, a position that gave me precious practical experience to learn the Canadian Health Care System and polish my communication skills.

In 2010 I started as an andrologist (a scientist who performs clinical or laboratory evaluations of male fertility) with Genesis Fertility Centre and moved to embryology (the science dealing with the formation, development, structure and functional activities of embryos) after rigorous on-site training. Just like my previous specialization in onco-hematology, the science of assisted reproductive technology (ART) is also very special and incredibly interesting. It’s a true, mysterious art form that requires both inspiration and great attitude.

However, the most rewarding part of the job is helping families become complete and happy.

When I began at Genesis I never imagined what a special experience it would become. The specialists here are at the top of their fields and I appreciate the knowledge and skill they bring with them to work every day.

My patients are my cherished teachers — I have learned many of the most important aspects of reproductive health from them. They have taught me that you cannot achieve excellence until you learn how to give from your heart.

Alongside embryology, my passions include growing orchids, cross stitching, playing sports and enjoying nature.
