Meet Us Monday: Brittany Smith, Andrologist

Brittany, an andrologist at Genesis Fertility Centre in Vancouver

Hello! My name is Brittany. In 2013, I started my career with Genesis last year in the lab. I am an andrologist, which means I deal with the male aspect of fertility. Most days you can find me in the Genesis laboratory sitting at a microscope doing detailed sperm analysis. Our laboratory team is extremely detail oriented and very close knit.

When I left high school, I originally wanted to become an animator because I loved to draw, but in the back of my mind I knew I wanted to work in health care.  After I graduated, I worked at UBC’s Centre for Disease Modeling. I never saw the light of day as I worked three floors underground in the laboratory. The teams of technicians I worked with were amazing and I really enjoyed working there. However, I later decided to pursue a career with Genesis Fertility Centre. And am I glad I did! It has been nothing but rewarding and a pleasure to work alongside such an experienced laboratory team. And I even have windows to look out of!

Believe it or not, I do other things outside of work. I recently purchased my very first home with my fiancé, which keeps us busy painting and fixing up the house. I am also in the process of planning my wedding for next year and I am pretty much done! So I have time to relax and enjoy the outdoors. If you ever need to find me, I will either be painting my home or hiking up to a beautiful lake with my fishing rod in my hands.

Meet Us Mondays: David Wilson, Andrologist

Andrologist at Genesis Fertility Centre in Vancouver

Hi, I’m David.  When people ask me what I do I jokingly say, ‘I make babies.’

I’m an andrologist, which means I specialize in working on the male side of the process.  I work on anything sperm related, from a profile to a freeze to a surgical sperm preparation.   I spend my days tucked away in the lab.  If I do meet you, I’m happy to answer any questions about what it is that we do.  I’m proud to be part of a close-knit, proactive and experienced lab team, which is part of a larger Genesis family.

I have been working at Genesis since early 2010.  I’ve had a varied career path before my arrival here.  I spent the majority of my time prior working in laboratories of the mining industry.  I got sidetracked for a bit and had a short stint as a RCMP constable.  I came to Genesis looking for a career where I could really make a difference.  Through further education and much training I have been lucky enough to be afforded the opportunity to work here.  I enjoy it immensely.  It’s both challenging and rewarding.  To play a part in helping patients realize their dreams of having a baby is a great honour.  Eventually I hope to become an embryologist, but whatever my future entails, I plan on remaining in the fertility field.  I’m not a person that always knew what they wanted to be when they grew up but I feel that at Genesis I have found a home.

I was born and raised in Vancouver.  When I’m not at work I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, keeping fit running or at the gym and playing lots of hockey.  If you see me with a black eye or limping around the clinic, that’s the reason.  I also like to do a lot of reading and I especially like to travel when I have the chance.
