Raluca Shaw - finance clerk at Genesis Fertility Centre

Meet Us Monday: Raluca Shaw

Hello everyone!

My name is Raluca Shaw, and I am a Finance Clerk here at Genesis.

You will get to see me every weekend on your Genesis journey. I am at the reception desk and if by chance you miss me, you will probably hear me… my laughter is quite contagious…I guess you’ll just have to come in and see for yourself!

I’m originally from Romania, but moved to Vancouver when I was 17 years old. I finished high school, completed college, got my first job and so-on in this city, so it is definitely home for me. I have been here now for 16 years, and never lived outside of Vancouver. I love everything this city has to offer.

I’ve been with Genesis for almost 4 years now, and during my time here I’ve seen many, many miracles happen. When nature says “no”, science steps in with a big “yes”! We have a wonderful team here at Genesis, and everyone works together to give you the most positive experience possible. I feel very privileged to work with such a great group of people.

Outside of the office, I recently joined a Zumba class, and I’m starting to see why people find it addictive. 5 minutes into the class and everyone has a smile on their face. I leave after 75 minutes feeling energized and with a clear mind. Dancing is good for the soul!

I look forward to meeting you on your voyage to parenthood!

Meet Us Mondays: Helen Ortojan, RN

Helen Ortojan

Helen Ortojan, RN, Genesis Fertility Centre

Hi, my name is Helen. I’m one of the nurses here in Genesis. My family and I came to Canada in 2005 (from the Philippines). I’ve worked so hard to become an OB-GYN but gave it up hoping to give my family a better future. I was asked so many times if I have regrets, my answer is always “no”. For us, Canada is a refreshing start of our journey. We had our share of struggles settling in but we are so blessed that transition has been quite easy and support is flowing.

My Journey to Genesis Fertility Centre

In my first few years in Canada, I worked as a nurse in a nursing home. Although I enjoyed the job and gained friends, I knew deep inside me I was looking for something else. I started searching for a job related to Maternity or OB specialty, and that was when I found Genesis Fertility Centre.

Since working at Genesis in April of 2013, my true journey has begun. I know that this is it, and I feel that I’m in the right place. The training period was quite challenging but working with people who value team work is helpful. Dr. Kashyap is a good mentor and is appreciative of each person’s worth.

How I can relate with patients

I’m happy that I have the opportunity to work in one of the best fertility centers in the country and helping patients to achieve their dreams of become parents. Having three miscarriages myself, I can empathize with them.  By being an Egg Donor/Surrogacy Program Coordinator, I am able to understand the whole essence of this job and am able to do it more effectively.

Lastly, being in an environment of dedicated staff who share the same vision as you is refreshing. I can say at the end of the day, being at Genesis doesn’t just feel like a job, but a personal life accomplishment.

Meet Us Mondays: Larysa Fedarava, Embryologist

Larysa Fedarava, Embryologist, Genesis Fertility Centre

Larysa Fedarava, Embryologist, Genesis Fertility Centre

My name is Larysa and I am originally from Belarus. I was clinical laboratory technician in a pediatric oncology / hematology centre in Belarus. I enjoyed the job because it required special skills and I relished its challenges while trying to save lives of children.

My family and I moved to Vancouver in 2007. In my very first Canadian job, I worked as a medical office assistant at Burnaby Medical Centre, a position that gave me precious practical experience to learn the Canadian Health Care System and polish my communication skills.

In 2010 I started as an andrologist (a scientist who performs clinical or laboratory evaluations of male fertility) with Genesis Fertility Centre and moved to embryology (the science dealing with the formation, development, structure and functional activities of embryos) after rigorous on-site training. Just like my previous specialization in onco-hematology, the science of assisted reproductive technology (ART) is also very special and incredibly interesting. It’s a true, mysterious art form that requires both inspiration and great attitude.

However, the most rewarding part of the job is helping families become complete and happy.

When I began at Genesis I never imagined what a special experience it would become. The specialists here are at the top of their fields and I appreciate the knowledge and skill they bring with them to work every day.

My patients are my cherished teachers — I have learned many of the most important aspects of reproductive health from them. They have taught me that you cannot achieve excellence until you learn how to give from your heart.

Alongside embryology, my passions include growing orchids, cross stitching, playing sports and enjoying nature.
